The Taoist Approach to Penis Health and Enlargement from The Multi-Orgasmic Man

I came across Exercise 16 from Mantak Chia and Douglas Abrams Arava's The Multi-Orgasmic Man while working through the book's broader framework on male sexual energy, and it stopped me. Not because the exercise is particularly strange — in the context of Taoist sexual practices, it's consistent with the tradition's approach to cultivating and directing sexual energy. But because it's one of the more specific and detailed practices in a tradition that often speaks in more general terms about energy cultivation.

I want to address this exercise honestly which means presenting what the Taoist framework says about it, being transparent about where it aligns with modern physiology, and being equally transparent about where the claims go beyond what clinical evidence supports.

The Taoist Framework

Taoist sexual practice approaches the body as an energy system. Sexual energy — jing — is understood as one of the most fundamental forms of vital energy available to the human body, connected to life force, creativity, and health. Where Western medicine focuses on the biomechanical and physiological dimensions of sexual function, Taoist practice focuses on the cultivation, circulation, and intentional direction of this energy.

The Multi-Orgasmic Man is Mantak Chia's adaptation of these ancient practices for a contemporary Western audience. Chia is one of the most prominent teachers of Taoist sexual practices in the West, and his books have introduced millions of readers to practices around sexual energy cultivation, retention, and multi-orgasmic experience.

Exercise 16 — the penis enlargement practice — sits within this framework. It uses breath, intention, energy direction, and physical exercise together as a coherent practice, rather than isolating any one component.

The Exercise Itself

The practice combines several elements that the Taoist framework understands as working synergistically:

Chi breathing. The opening steps involve directing breath energy down from the throat through the stomach and into the pelvis and penis. In the Taoist model, this breath is understood as carrying chi — vital energy — to the target area. From a physiological standpoint, deep diaphragmatic breathing into the pelvic region does produce measurable effects: it activates the pelvic floor, increases circulation to the pelvic region, and shifts the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance — which is the state associated with arousal and erection.

The Million-Dollar Point. This is the perineal point between the anus and scrotum — the same area I described as the external prostate access point in the prostate play post. Chia calls it the Million-Dollar Point because pressing it during the period just before ejaculation allows men to retain semen while still experiencing orgasmic sensation — one of the key practices in the multi-orgasmic male technique. In the enlargement exercise, pressing it after directing energy to the penis is understood as "locking" the energy in place.

The stretching sequence. The rhythmic stretching in different directions — forward, right, left, downward — is described in the tradition as encouraging increased blood flow and tissue pliability. Modern practitioners of penis stretching exercises make similar claims, though the clinical evidence for permanent enlargement through manual stretching alone is limited. What the stretching does produce is increased circulation, tissue warming, and awareness of penile sensation — all of which have genuine value regardless of whether they produce measurable size increases.

The massage and erection component. Building an erection during the exercise and then using the holding/pulling technique while erect brings significantly more blood into the erectile tissue than the non-erect stretching would alone. Erectile tissue, when regularly engorged, is generally considered healthier tissue from a vascular standpoint.

Warm water soak. The final step — soaking in warm water — is understood in Taoist terms as helping the penis absorb yang (warm) energy. Physiologically, it continues the increased circulation that the exercise initiated and promotes the tissue relaxation that follows active stretching.

Honest Assessment: What It Likely Does and Doesn't Do

Let me be direct about where the evidence is solid and where it's not.

What the practice genuinely produces:

  • Increased circulation to the penile and pelvic region through breathwork and physical engagement

  • Improved pelvic floor awareness and activation which is directly relevant to erectile quality, ejaculatory control, and orgasmic intensity

  • Somatic body awareness in the genital region, which many men are significantly underdeveloped in

  • Possible improvements in erectile quality through regular vascular engagement of erectile tissue

  • Within the Taoist framework, the development of a felt sense of sexual energy and its movement through the body — a form of energetic body literacy that Chia's entire system is designed to develop

What the evidence doesn't strongly support:

  • Permanent structural enlargement of the penis through manual exercises alone. The clinical research on penis traction devices which apply more consistent and measurable tension than manual stretching shows modest average gains of roughly 1-2 cm in length after months of consistent use. Manual stretching exercises produce less consistent tension and are even less supported for permanent gains.

The honest framing is: this is a practice for cultivating sexual energy, improving pelvic health, and developing the kind of somatic awareness of sexual function that the Taoist tradition values with the enlargement claim being the most culturally compelling but least evidence-supported element.

Why It's Still Worth Engaging With

Even setting aside the enlargement claim, the practice is worth engaging with for what it genuinely produces.

The combination of breathwork, pelvic floor activation, and deliberate circulation to the penile region is essentially a somatic sexual health practice — one that builds the body literacy and vascular health that support the broader range of male sexual function. Men who practice pelvic floor work, who develop awareness of the Million-Dollar Point and its role in ejaculatory control, who regularly engage erection as a practice rather than only in partnered contexts — these men tend to have better erectile health, more options around ejaculatory timing, and more developed somatic awareness than those who don't.

The Taoist tradition understood this millennia before clinical medicine had the vocabulary to describe the mechanisms. The specific claims about how it works (chi, yang energy, energetic locking) may not map onto modern physiology perfectly. The practices themselves, when engaged with consistently and honestly, tend to produce results worth having.

If you engage with this practice, do so with realistic expectations about the enlargement claim and genuine curiosity about what regular, deliberate, energetically intentional engagement with your own sexual body produces over time. That's the more interesting result anyway.
