The Taoist Thrusting Technique That Changes Everything (The 9-and-1 Method)

I want to share a practice from the Taoist sexual tradition that I've been incorporating and that has produced more immediate and more significant results than most physical technique adjustments I've made: the nine shallow thrusts followed by one deep thrust, drawn from Mantak Chia's work and the broader canon of Taoist sexual practice.
This sounds simple. It is simple. What it does to the quality of a sexual encounter is not simple at all.

The Taoist Framework for Thrusting
Taoist sexual philosophy approaches intercourse not as a destination-oriented act with a single pace driving toward climax, but as a practice in building, circulating, and exchanging sexual energy between partners. In this framework, variation in depth and rhythm serves purposes beyond physical stimulation — it maintains the heightened awareness and presence of both partners, prevents the numbing habituation that repetitive sensation produces, and creates a specific energetic dynamic between the giving and receiving partner.
The nine-and-one ratio — nine shallow followed by one deep — is one of the most well-documented practices in Taoist sexual texts. Variations on it appear in texts going back centuries, with different traditions recommending different ratios (some use 3-and-1, some 9-and-1, some more elaborate progressions). The underlying principle across all variations is the same: deliberate alternation between shallow and deep penetration produces an experience qualitatively different from uniform depth thrusting.
Why It Works: The Physiology
The physiological reasons for the practice's effectiveness are worth understanding, because they explain what you're actually producing rather than leaving it at "the Taoists said so."
The vacuum effect. Shallow thrusts create a different quality of contact than deep ones. With shallow penetration — entering only an inch or two — the body of the penis creates friction primarily against the vaginal entrance, where nerve density is highest. When followed by a full, deep thrust, the contrast in sensation is dramatic and the deep thrust after shallow ones feels more intense to both partners than the same thrust would if it arrived in a sequence of uniform deep thrusting. The contrast amplifies the signal.
This is the neurological habituation principle applied specifically to thrusting: the nervous system adapts to consistent stimulus. A variation in stimulus — shallow to deep — resets the sensitivity. The deep thrust after nine shallow ones produces more sensation than the tenth deep thrust in a sequence of ten identical deep thrusts.
Clitoral base stimulation. This is the element most worth adding that the classic texts don't always specify explicitly: with shallow thrusting, the base of the penis can be used to provide direct pressure and movement against the clitoral region. This is one of the most practically significant adjustments available for couples where the orgasm gap is a concern — using the shaft's base against the external clitoral area during shallower penetration provides simultaneous internal and external stimulation that many couples have never intentionally incorporated.
In practice this means: rather than thrusting entirely in and out through shallow strokes, positioning so the base of the penis maintains contact with or moves against the clitoral area during the shallow phase. The specific geometry varies by position and couple, but the principle is: shallow doesn't have to mean less clitoral engagement. With attention to positioning, it can mean more.
Sustained arousal without premature escalation. One of the most significant practical benefits of the nine-and-one pattern is what it does for male arousal management. Uniform deep thrusting is the most direct route to rapid escalation toward ejaculation. Shallow thrusting is significantly less stimulating for the man, while often being more stimulating for the woman (whose highest nerve density is in the vaginal entrance). The nine-and-one pattern allows men to sustain intercourse longer — not through suppression or distraction, but through the natural variation in stimulation that the pattern provides.
How to Practice It
The practice is simpler to describe than some techniques but requires some deliberateness to maintain, especially early on.
Begin with nine shallow thrusts. Penetrate only two to three inches. Move deliberately, maintaining rhythm, using this phase to be genuinely present to sensation rather than treating it as a warm-up. Pay attention to what's happening at the vaginal entrance — both the physical sensation and your partner's responses.
Follow with one full, deep thrust. The contrast is the thing. Let the transition from shallow to deep be deliberate rather than hurried. Your partner will typically respond more visibly to this thrust than to equivalent deep thrusts in a uniform sequence — because the nine shallow ones have built anticipation that makes the deep one land differently.
Repeat the cycle. Nine shallow, one deep. Adjust the ratio as you go — some encounters call for more shallow, some for more variation. The Taoists often suggest progressions: starting with 9-and-1, moving to 8-and-2, then 7-and-3, and so on — gradually increasing the proportion of deep thrusts as both partners' arousal builds. This mirrors the energetic build that the tradition describes.
Use the shallow phase for clitoral engagement. Experiment with positioning so the base of your penis maintains contact with the clitoral area during the shallow thrusts. This may require angling downward slightly, or positioning so contact is maintained throughout rather than breaking with each stroke. The specific adjustment varies by couple and position — it's worth trying in missionary first, where the geometry is most controllable, before adapting to other positions.
Varying It as Needed
The nine-and-one ratio is a starting point, not a fixed rule. What it's teaching you is the value of deliberate variation in depth — and once you've internalized that principle, you can apply it fluidly.
Moments of all shallow, building tension through anticipation. A sequence of deeper thrusts as both partners approach higher arousal. Pausing entirely — stillness, full penetration held without movement — which produces its own distinct effect on both partners' experience. The Taoist tradition describes specific sequences for different stages of arousal; the practical takeaway is that deliberate attention to depth, rhythm, and variation produces significantly more than unconscious pacing toward climax.
Why This Matters
The technique is simple enough that it might seem unremarkable. What it produces in practice — particularly the shift from uniform pacing toward conscious, deliberate variation — tends to be immediately noticeable to both partners.
This is technique in service of presence. The deliberateness required to maintain the pattern keeps both the man and the woman more consciously in the encounter than habitual pacing allows. It's a small structural practice that produces a significant quality of attention — which is, ultimately, the thing that makes intimate encounters feel genuinely alive.
